SLAMBALL GETS SLAMMIN’ RATINGS Championship Game on CBS Sports Outperforms Expectations; Tops Recent Broadcast TV Ratings for NHL and Arena Football Story Arc Featuring SlamBall Boosts One Tree Hill Ratings
LOS ANGELES, NOVEMBER 4, 2008 – SlamBall, the new full-contact competition sport from Tollin Productions and IMG Sports Media that includes elements of basketball, football, hockey, soccer and gymnastics, scored impressive ratings with yesterday’s championship game on CBS Sports.
Going head to head with the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys vs. New York Giants match-up – arguably the biggest game of the season – on Fox and NASCAR’s “Sprint Cup in Fort Worth” on ABC, the 2008 Championship Series title game exceeded all expectations with a 1.4 overnight rating (3 share), according to Nielsen Media Research data. SlamBall also achieved impressive ratings in key local markets, including Buffalo (4.9/9), Minneapolis (4.1/9 share), Dayton (3.9/7), Cleveland (3.4/7), Indianapolis (2.8/5) and Pittsburgh (2.2/4).
Additionally, SlamBall has given a ratings boost to The CW series One Tree Hill since it was integrated into a multiple-episode story arc that shows Nathan Scott (James Lafferty) drawn to the action-packed sport. In fact, the rating for the October 20 episode of One Tree Hill featuring SlamBall hit 3.0/8 with Adults 18-34, an all-time series high.
Said Mason Gordon, SlamBall creator: “SlamBall is a hot, up-and-coming sport that is exciting fans around the world, and we are very excited to be getting ratings news that beat our projections by a wide margin. We know the audience is out there, and beating the 1.0 that the NHL on NBC averaged for the 2007-08 regular season, as well as the 0.8 rating the Arena Football League averaged the last time it was on broadcast television in 2006, is icing on the cake.”
SlamBall is a joint venture between IMG Sports Media, the sports production and distribution division of IMG Worldwide, and Tollin Productions, an award-winning and highly acclaimed television and feature film production company. SlamBall operates under the leadership of Commissioner Pat Croce, the renowned sports entrepreneur and former owner of the Philadelphia 76ers.
About SlamBallCreated by sports entrepreneur Mason Gordon, SlamBall is the first action team sport, a full-contact competition played on a combination of surfaces that includes elements of basketball, football, hockey, soccer and gymnastics. The high-flying, hard-hitting action is often described as a video game brought to life.
SlamBall features two teams (playing four on four) engaged in 20-minute games (four, five-minute quarters). The playing surface is approximately the size of a regulation basketball court, with four springbeds built into the court around each 10-foot basket. The remainder of the court is fully shock absorbent and surrounded by 12-foot plexiglass walls that keep the ball in play at all times. More information is available at www.slamball.net.
